CDC를 비롯한 세계 각국의 보건당국은 확진된 환자와의 접촉이나 심각한 감염지역에 다녀와 감염 위험이 높은 개인들에 대해 14일간의 격리 및 적극 감시를 실시해 왔다. 최신 의학저널 ‘내과학회지’(Annals of Internal Medicine) 3월 10일 자에 발표된 자료에 따르면, 코로나-19 증상이 시작된 환자의 약 98%는 감염 뒤 11.5일 이내에 발병하였고, 14일간 격리된 사람 1만 명당 101명이 격리 해제 뒤에 증상이 나타나는 것으로 추정됨을 보고하였다.

미국 존스홉킨스 공중보건대 연구팀이 코로나19 감염병(COVID-19)을 일으키는 신종 코로나바이러스(SARS-CoV-2)의 공개된 자료를 분석한 결과, 병원체에 노출된 뒤 증상 발현까지의 중앙값(median time)은 5.1일(CI, 4.5 to 5.8 days)인 것으로 밝혔다.

코로나19 감염병(COVID-19) 잠복기 중앙값이 5.1일(CI, 4.5 to 5.8 days)이라는 추정은 감염 사례가 몇 안 됐을 때 나왔던 최초의 추정치와 유사하다. 이러한 결과를 과거 코로나바이러스군인 중증급성호흡기증후군(SARS-CoV)와 비교하면 같은 범위에 있다. 코로나바이러스의 한 종류로, 상대적으로 사망률이 높은 중동호흡기증후군(MERS-CoV)의 평균 잠복기는 5~7일로 조금 더 길게 추정된다. 흔한 감기를 일으키는 인간 코로나바이러스의 발병 전 평균 잠복기는 약 3일 정도로 알려져 있다.

COVID-19의 평균 잠복기간은 5.1 일로 추정되었으며 증상이 있는 거의 모든 사례에서 12 일 이내에 감염이 나타날 것으로 예상된다. 미국 CDC에서 권장하는 현재의 능동적 모니터링 기간인 14 일은 근거에 의해 잘 지지됨을 알 수 있다. 증상 질환은 종종 병원체의감염력과 연관이 있다. 그러나, 경증 증상 및 무증상 사례에 의한 SARS-CoV-2 감염의 최근 자료들을 고려할 때, 감염성 발병 (잠복기)에 노출 된 시간이 여기에서 추정 된 배양 기간보다 짧을 수 있으며, 이는 감염 역학에 중요한 영향을 미친다.

연구팀은 이번 연구를 위해 2월 24일 이전에 중국과 다른 나라에서 검출된 사례 181건을 분석했다. 각 사례에는 환자가 바이러스와 접촉한 예상 노출 날짜와 증상 발현 날짜를 포함시켰다. 대부분의 사례들은 코로나19가 발원한 중국 우한을 오가거나, 우한이 성도인 후베이성에 다녀간 개인들이 노출된 것이었다. 미국 CDC를 비롯한 세계 각국의 보건당국은 확진된 환자와의 접촉이나 심각한 감염지역에 다녀와 감염 위험이 높은 개인들에 대해 14일간의 격리 및 적극 감시를 실시해 왔다. 이번 연구결과를 통하여 COVID-19의 잠복기 중앙값은 대략 5일이고 이는 SARS와 유사함을 밝혔다. 모니터링 시작시점에서 감염이 발생한다는 가정하에서 매 10,000 사례중에서 101건이 14일 후에 증상이 발현됨을 추정할 수 있다. 이러한 결론에 의하면 현재 실시되고 있는 14일 동안의 격리기간이나 적극적인 감시는 합리적이고 근거에 기반한 COVID-19 감염전파 통제정책 설정에 도움이 될 수 있음을 밝혔다.
